CHALLENGES AND THE WAY FORWARD
PART I: COORDINATED BY DR. OFISI (KCMF)
·
There will be an ICMDA conference in 2006 in Sidney, Australia.
·
The next regional conference will be hosted by Moi University in 2005.
·
Pray for Tanzania to get more students involved.
·
We need to Christians from more countries. It was agreed that the
countries represented at this conference would ‘adopt’ other countries into
this regional initiative and pray for them, go to and give to them. This
responsibility was shared as follows:
·
Uganda adopted Rwanda, Burundi and DRC
·
Kenya adopted Sudan and Ethiopia
Eventually, we hope to reach Egypt and the
Middle East.
·
Suggested ways of reaching them:
·
Inviting them for retreats
·
Paying for their air tickets
·
Going there for elective studies. This helps in getting contacts.
·
It was noted that Rwanda medical school has no fellowship and suggested
that UCMF should help Ugandan students to reach out to the students in Rwanda.
Suggested ways include the following:
·
Go for a mission to the University and start up a fellowship there.
·
Invite a student to a retreat through whom we can reach out to the
whole country.
·
The same approach could be used for DRC. However it was noted that the
DRC is not so safe right now. We need to pray for the brethren in the medical
schools there.
·
There had been a idea of cross-cultural camps had been suggested from
ICMDA.
·
Tanzania has 4 medical schools. The representative from Tumaini medical
school promised to make ICMDA alive in Tanzania and asked the conference attendees
to pray for the brethren in Tanzania.
·
The exam period presented a problem for the students of Makerere
University who wanted to attend the last ICMDA world congress. It was noted
that this was a problem faced by other universities. It was suggested that
local arrangements be made to enable students to make it for the future
conferences.
·
It was recommended that finalists should be kept informed about the
student activities so that they can help to support them.
Each of the conference attendees was challenged to go home with an individual goal of improving students’ ministry which is simple, achievable and practical.
Ideas were welcomed and the following suggestions were made:
·
Let us incorporate what we have learnt into our fellowship programmes
and practice it. As an individual, put into practice the knowledge you have
acquired at this conference.
·
Share with those who did not attend and send feedback to Dr. Daphne.
Volunteers who promised to do this included Patrick Mwidunda, Dr. Jan Kunene,
Arinaitwe Moses, Jackson Musuuza.
·
Dr. Dunstan Kalanzi encouraged
us to continue networking by keeping in touch via e-mail, SMS etc. Dr. Daphne
that instead of keeping long lists of addresses, each of us should commit
ourselves to keep in touch with 2 or 3 friends, preferably a roommate and
atleast one other person and preferably from different universities. The
purpose of this would be to encourage one another, share ideas, support one
another in prayer etc.
·
Attendees were reminded of the existence of a website
(www.icmdastudentconf.faithweb.com) which had been set up during the
organisation of this conference. This could continue to be used by all
attendees to keep in touch. Some students volunteered to keep submitting news
from their universities to the website. These included Anne Musuva(UON), Jackie
Kizza(MUK), Michael (MUST), Norah (Moi), Patrick Mwidunda (Tumaini).
·
The issue of adopting universities in the neighbouring countries was
again raised and a deadline for contacting them was set at one month. We were
encouraged to start right away with prayer.
·
Mbarara University to pray for Butare University in Rwanda
·
Nairobi University to pray for Muhimbili University in Tanzania
·
Moi University to pray for Kilimanjaro (Tz) and Sudanese universities
·
Makerere University was yet to identify a university to reach out to.
In conclusion, Dr. Daphne thanked God for His faithfulness in providing even more than we needed. She encouraged us to be faithful in the little things and that way God would entrust us with bigger things. Together with her we acknowledged that it is not how you start that matters, but rather how you finish. She encouraged us walk with God in the good and bad times just like Daniel did. She said that it was such a bad thing to enjoy grace and then fall away. She encouraged us to run the race to the very end and not to condemn brethren who fall but rather pray for them and encourage them to come back to the Lord.
